The building everyone knows here is Korner’s Folly. Jule Gilmer Korner started it in 1878 and opened it to the public in 1880, and it holds 22 rooms spread across three floors and seven different levels. It is an extreme case. It is also a fair picture of what older houses in town do to a tape measure: nothing repeats, and every opening has to be treated as its own job.

Abington and Canterbury are the established neighborhoods most people name first. Canterbury dates to the 1970s and much of Abington to the 1980s, with newer houses filled in since. Both have mature trees, which matters more than it sounds. A room shaded by a big oak in July is bright and bare in January. A fabric that seemed right in summer can feel thin by winter. The newer growth sits north and west of the old center, out toward the 66 corridor and the Forsyth County line. Those are production houses with repeating window sizes and taller ceilings than the older stock. Two-story family rooms are common, and the upper windows in them usually go untreated for years because nobody wants to deal with them.
