What we see in Lewisville homes
The town grew up around the Shallow Ford, the Yadkin River crossing used by travelers on the Great Wagon Road in the 1770s. Lewis Laugenour, whom the town is named for, finished a brick house on Shallowford Road in 1860 and it is still standing. A handful of period houses survive nearby. Their windows are tall, narrow, and often out of square by a quarter inch or more. We measure each one at three points and build to the tightest reading, because a shade cut to the widest number will bind.
Most of what we actually install here is newer. Sequoia Place, Oak Grove, and the streets off Williams Road and Concord Church Road are mainly 1990s and 2000s single-family homes on generous lots. With neighbors set well back, privacy is less of a daily problem than glare is. Rooms on the west side take direct sun for hours. A solar shade in a lighter openness keeps the view of the yard and cuts the heat.
Riverway on the Yadkin and the properties nearer the water bring a different issue. Humidity runs higher close to the river, and real wood slats can cup over a few summers in a room that is not conditioned well. Faux wood holds its shape in that air. In a properly heated and cooled room, real wood is fine, and we will say which rooms fall on which side of that line.
Shallowford Square sits at the center of town and hosts concerts through the warm months. Houses within a few blocks of it are older and smaller, with single windows carrying whole rooms. Top-down bottom-up cellular shades work well there. You get privacy at street level and daylight over the top of it at the same time.
